AACAI NSW/ACT Animal Bone Workshop
The AACAI NSW/ACT Chapter invites you to an afternoon of professional development focused on the identification of animal bones in the Australian archaeological context.
This practical, hands-on workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of animal bone identification within an Australian archaeological context.
The session begins with a concise theoretical overview, followed by an extended practical component where participants will work directly with real specimens. You’ll learn how to recognise different bone elements and distinguish between species.
Designed for beginners and early-career practitioners, this workshop is also ideal as a refresher for heritage professionals who do not regularly work with animal bone assemblages.
The workshop will be delivered by Dr Sofia Samper Carro, a Senior Lecturer in Archaeological Science at the Australian National University. Dr Samper Carro is a highly experienced zooarchaeologist with over 20 years of experience, having worked extensively across Southeast Asia, Australia, and Western Europe. She will bring a comprehensive Australian reference collection for participants to work with throughout the session.
Date: Thursday 7 May 2026.
Time: 1-5pm
Location: 51 Reuss St, Leichhardt NSW, Australia
