SUMMARY:2025 AAA\AIMA Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 joint Australian Archaeological Association (AAA) and Australasian Institute of Maritime Archaeology (AIMA) conference will take place at the Esplanade Hotel in Walyalup/Fremantle\, WA from 2 – 5 December 2025. \nThis years conference invites a multi-faceted exploration of temporal themes within the discipline. This will be a platform to celebrate the significant strides made in archaeology and maritime archaeology\, particularly regarding the increased inclusion and empowerment of previously silenced voices. We encourage reflections on how perspectives from Indigenous Australians and other First Nations peoples\, women\, queer communities\, slaves\, migrants and other historically underrepresented groups have enriched and reshaped these fields\, prompting critical examination of past practices and fostering a more inclusive future. We invite the results of investigations from different subdisciplines which illuminate the change and continuity of people and Country through time. Certain aspects of the human experience transcend time altogether\, connecting us to our ancestors and future generations\, so “It’s About Time!” also beckons us to delve deeper into the very concept of time itself. We welcome presentations that challenge conventional\, linear understandings of time and consider alternative temporal ontologies. We look forward to a collective examination of how archaeology and maritime archaeology engage with the past\, present\, and future through the multi-faceted dimensions of time. \nDetails about the conference can be found here. \nKeep posted for AACAI events at the conference…

SUMMARY:AACAI WA Sundowner Talk - Dr Fiona Hook
DESCRIPTION:AACAI WA are delighted to present a sundowner talk during National Archaeology Week by Fiona Hook entitled: \nWorked shell in deep time: Methods for identifying cultural modification of shell in Western Australian archaeological sites \nFiona Hook presents a practical framework for identifying culturally modified shell in Aboriginal archaeological sites across Western Australia\, based on recent research at Boodie Cave. Using case studies of scaphopod (tusk shell) beads and Melo amphora (baler shell) knives\, Fiona will outline how worked shell can be distinguished from natural breakage through diagnostic features such as percussion fracture patterns\, structured polish\, use-wear development\, and manufacturing debris signatures. A critical part of this identification process is an understanding of shell taxonomy and the macro- and micromorphological properties of different species\, as these characteristics directly influence how shells fracture\, wear\, and preserve in archaeological contexts. Fiona draws on experimental replication studies\, microscopic analysis\, and comparisons with historical collections to build a robust set of criteria for recognising worked shell. These insights contribute to a broader understanding of symbolic and utilitarian shell working traditions in deep-time Aboriginal coastal economies and offer new tools for identifying often-overlooked components of archaeological assemblages. \n \nSeminar Details: \nWednesday 21st May at 6pm \nThe Albion Hotel\, 535 Stirling Highway\, Cottesloe \nFood will be provided \nPlease make sure to book by Friday the Fri 16th of May! SUMMARY:AACAI WA Sundowner Seminar - Richard Fullagar and Judith Field
DESCRIPTION:AACAI’s WA Chapter are delighted to present a double-header of talks on grindstone classification and ancient starch residues from Richard Fullagar and Judith Field. \nClassification and Function of Grinding Stones \nRichard will discuss his work on the classification and function of grinding stones\, as articulated in the book (in progress) on Aboriginal ground stone implements. He will focus on a chapter about a convenient typology of ground stone implements for the Murray Darling Basin. Many of these implements have been assessed in studies of form\, function\, technology\, use wear and residues. There are about 25 tool types documented\, with morphological and functional variables\, in a classification system relevant to grinding stones being recorded in the Pilbara\, by the Desert to the Sea team. \nAn Introduction to Ancient Starch Residues and the potential for insights into past plant use \nJudith will present a basic introduction to the study of ancient starch (and perhaps other residues) related to use. Unlike pollen or photolith studies\, ancient starch\, where it is preserved\, can be quite challenging to identify and/or attribute to a plant taxa. Determining whether it is worth going down this track when evaluating a ground or flaked stone assemblage requires consideration of a variety of factors. In providing some insights to analysing starch  as a microfossil may help guide practitioners in deciding if it can be included in their research design. \n \nSeminar Details: \nMonday 17th February at 6pm \nThe Albion Hotel\, 535 Stirling Highway\, Cottesloe \nFood will be provided \nPlease make sure to book by Friday the 14th of February!
