SUMMARY:AACAI WA Lithics Workshop

(AACAI WA) are delighted to present a two-day workshop on lithics by renowned Australian archaeologist Peter Hiscock\, an Honorary Professor at the University of Queensland\, and Adjunct Research Fellow at Griffith University. \nOver the course of two days\, Peter will provide lithics training to participants. He will discuss how lithic technology in the past might have worked and how you can describe the objects you find in ways that help you understand past human decisions and problem solving. He will also address what kinds of analyses are practical and cost-effective for the skill level and resources of each analyst\, and what information can and cannot be reliably inferred from lithics. \nThe workshop will be held at the University of Western Australia (UWA) Crawley campus on Friday 24th April and Saturday 25th April 2026\, starting at 9am sharp and concluding at 4pm each day. \nVenue details will be shared with participants before the workshop. \nPrices are as follows (excludes Humantix fees): \n\nAACAI Member $300\nStudent $300\nFirst Nations $300\nNon-Member $400\n\nSpaces are limited due to venue size and ticket sales will close by COB Wednesday 15th April for catering purposes. \nCatering will be provided throughout each day (inclusive of price) – please let us know if you have any dietary requirements on your booking. \nPlease share through your booking any questions about lithics that you may have and would like Peter to answer at the workshop. \nAACAI WA is grateful to the Desert People Project at UWA for supporting this workshop. \nhttps://events.humanitix.com/aacai-wa-lithics-workshop

SUMMARY:Unearthed 2026 Series: Siltstone in the Bracken: Interpreting the Archaeological Landscape of Point Puer
DESCRIPTION:Once a trade school and reformatory for over 700 convict boys\, Point Puer Boys’ Establishment (1834–1849) survives today as a largely unexcavated archaeological landscape containing tumbled stone walls\, half-dug foundation trenches\, and eight lonesome solitary cells perched on a cliff. In this talk\, Caiti D’Gluyas will focus on the archaeological landscape to interpret the spatial logic of the domestic\, institutional and punitive spaces; the aqueduct that served a site with no reliable fresh water; and the siltstone construction and quarry face that speak to the texture of institutional life. This talk takes the material record seriously on its own terms\, moving across the Point Puer peninsula to examine what is actually there\, beneath the bracken and blue gums. \nThursday 7 May\, 10:30 am – 11:30 am\nOnline\nAnyone can view and join. \nAbout Unearthed \nUnearthed is a series of programs recognising the contributions of archaeology to our knowledge and understanding of Australian convict heritage hosted by Port Arthur Historic Sites. \nThis talk is presented in conjunction with ‘Little Depraved Felons: The Boys of Point Puer‘\, an exhibition at Port Arthur Historic Site exploring the first purpose-built juvenile prison in the British Empire.

SUMMARY:AACAI NSW/ACT Animal Bone Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The AACAI NSW/ACT Chapter invites you to an afternoon of professional development focused on the identification of animal bones in the Australian archaeological context. \nThis practical\, hands-on workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of animal bone identification within an Australian archaeological context. \nThe session begins with a concise theoretical overview\, followed by an extended practical component where participants will work directly with real specimens. You’ll learn how to recognise different bone elements and distinguish between species. \nDesigned for beginners and early-career practitioners\, this workshop is also ideal as a refresher for heritage professionals who do not regularly work with animal bone assemblages. \nThe workshop will be delivered by Dr Sofia Samper Carro\, a Senior Lecturer in Archaeological Science at the Australian National University. Dr Samper Carro is a highly experienced zooarchaeologist with over 20 years of experience\, having worked extensively across Southeast Asia\, Australia\, and Western Europe. SUMMARY:Unearthed 2026 Series: Less is More? Sustainability & Significance in Archaeological Collections
DESCRIPTION:Port Arthur Historic Site Management Authority (PAHSMA) holds extensive archaeological material generated though decades of excavation. Past approaches to collection management\, however\, has separated it from broader collection systems\, limiting accessibility and obscuring its significance within the wider organisational context. In recent years\, PAHSMA have been advancing a more integrated\, whole-of-collection approach that brings archaeological material into alignment with established collection management regimes. \nThis talk is presented as part of National Archaeology Week 2026. \nThursday 21 May\, 10:30 am – 11:30 am\nOnline\nAnyone can view and join.\nAbout Unearthed \nUnearthed is a series of programs recognising the contributions of archaeology to our knowledge and understanding of Australian convict heritage hosted by Port Arthur Historic Sites.

SUMMARY:Unearthed 2026 Series: A Virtual Tour of Point Puer Boys' Reformatory
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual tour of Point Puer\, the British Empire’s first purpose-built boys prison. \nThis talk first explores how archaeological research and historical records have been combined to create a detailed digital recreation of the site as it may have appeared in the 1840s. We will then step inside the 3D model and explore the prison in virtual form\, moving through its buildings and spaces to gain a deeper sense of what life may have been like for the young boys imprisoned at Point Puer. John’s work offers an insight into how digital technology is transforming the way archaeologists interpret and explore our past. \nThursday 28 May\, 10:30 am – 11:30 am\nOnline\nAnyone can view and join. \nAbout Unearthed \nUnearthed is a series of programs recognising the contributions of archaeology to our knowledge and understanding of Australian convict heritage hosted by Port Arthur Historic Sites. \nThis talk is presented in conjunction with ‘Little Depraved Felons: The Boys of Point Puer’\, an exhibition at Port Arthur Historic Site exploring the first purpose-built juvenile prison in the British Empire. \nAbout the presenter \nJohn Stephenson was introduced to the field of archaeology by accident while working in the oil and gas industry. He was lucky enough to be involved in unanticipated finds in WA\, Egypt\, and Papua New Guinea\, which sparked an interest in the application of digital technologies to identify\, record\, and interpret archaeological sites. On returning to Tasmania to live\, he undertook formal studies in Archaeology\, and has applied digital technologies to record and recreate many Tasmanian historic sites. John is the founder of Digital Heritage Studio.

SUMMARY:Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology (ASHA) Conference 2026
DESCRIPTION:Finding Common Ground: 2026 ASHA Conference\, Brisbane \nSave the Date and Call for Papers \nMore than ever\, historical archaeology must bring together diverse practitioners\, methods and perspectives. For 2026 the Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology presents our friendliest conference yet\, to give us all space to find our common ground. Join ASHA in sunny Brisbane on Friday and Saturday 21-22 August 2026 to explore what we share across our varied approaches and experience. This conference celebrates the discipline’s inclusivity while asking how we find shared purpose and understanding across different research traditions\, community partnerships\, theoretical frameworks\, and practical applications. ASHA conferences are well known for having a supportive atmosphere. We therefore particularly welcome early career archaeologists\, students and ‘HA-curious’ archaeologists to experience this for themselves! \nPaper submissions are now open. This year\, we are calling for conference paper submissions without sessions. We aim to provide space for papers on any topic relevant to ASHA\, from which papers will be aligned to create sessions. We hope to open up more genuinely cohesive session themes through this process and establish new common ground! \nPlease email conference@asha.org.au with your paper submission. Paper abstracts are due by 1 June 2026.
