DESCRIPTION:Looking Backwards – Looking Forwards: 30 Years and 50 Years of Tasmania’s State Cultural Heritage Legislation\nThis Symposium provides an opportunity after 50 years of operation of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1975 (formerly the Aboriginal Relics Act 1975) and almost 30 years of operation of the Historic Cultural Heritage Act 1995 to review these two key pieces of Tasmanian cultural heritage legislation. It is an opportunity to explore how well this heritage is understood\, valued and managed today\, how well the legislation has worked to achieve this\, and what might be required to provide better protections for Tasmania’s cultural heritage into the future. \nThe Symposium provides a forum for cultural heritage and allied professionals to share their knowledge and experience to help inform future legislative change. SUMMARY:Unearthed 2026 Series: A Virtual Tour of Point Puer Boys' Reformatory
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual tour of Point Puer\, the British Empire’s first purpose-built boys prison. \nThis talk first explores how archaeological research and historical records have been combined to create a detailed digital recreation of the site as it may have appeared in the 1840s. We will then step inside the 3D model and explore the prison in virtual form\, moving through its buildings and spaces to gain a deeper sense of what life may have been like for the young boys imprisoned at Point Puer. John’s work offers an insight into how digital technology is transforming the way archaeologists interpret and explore our past. \nThursday 28 May\, 10:30 am – 11:30 am\nOnline\nAnyone can view and join. \nAbout Unearthed \nUnearthed is a series of programs recognising the contributions of archaeology to our knowledge and understanding of Australian convict heritage hosted by Port Arthur Historic Sites. \nThis talk is presented in conjunction with ‘Little Depraved Felons: The Boys of Point Puer’\, an exhibition at Port Arthur Historic Site exploring the first purpose-built juvenile prison in the British Empire. \nAbout the presenter \nJohn Stephenson was introduced to the field of archaeology by accident while working in the oil and gas industry. He was lucky enough to be involved in unanticipated finds in WA\, Egypt\, and Papua New Guinea\, which sparked an interest in the application of digital technologies to identify\, record\, and interpret archaeological sites. On returning to Tasmania to live\, he undertook formal studies in Archaeology\, and has applied digital technologies to record and recreate many Tasmanian historic sites. John is the founder of Digital Heritage Studio.

For 2026 the Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology presents our friendliest conference yet\, to give us all space to find our common ground. Join ASHA in sunny Brisbane on Friday and Saturday 21-22 August 2026 to explore what we share across our varied approaches and experience. This conference celebrates the discipline’s inclusivity while asking how we find shared purpose and understanding across different research traditions\, community partnerships\, theoretical frameworks\, and practical applications. ASHA conferences are well known for having a supportive atmosphere. We therefore particularly welcome early career archaeologists\, students and ‘HA-curious’ archaeologists to experience this for themselves! \nPaper submissions are now open. This year\, we are calling for conference paper submissions without sessions. We aim to provide space for papers on any topic relevant to ASHA\, from which papers will be aligned to create sessions. This three-day\, student-led gathering will be held both in person on UQ’s St Lucia campus and online\, bringing together undergraduates\, honours candidates\, postgraduates\, and early-career researchers from across Australia. \nAt NASC\, you’ll have the chance to showcase your research in archaeology or ancient history through dynamic presentations and poster exhibitions in a welcoming environment. You’ll exchange ideas with fellow students and build connections with leaders from academia\, heritage consultancies\, museum professions\, and more. \nThis year\, there is a special focus on careers in archaeology. You’ll connect with industry experts and discover professional pathways at our in-person careers expo – all within a friendly\, collaborative atmosphere. \n\nCall for Abstracts \n\n\nAbstract submissions for NASC 2026 are now open and will close on the 30th of April 2026.
