Gary P. Marriner (Associate Heritage Consultant, EcoLogical Australia) is an archaeologist and heritage consultant with over 15 years of experience across the academic and commercial spheres in the UK, Australia and other countries. He is a recognised Excavation Director under the NSW Heritage Act 1977. Dr Marriner began his education at the University of Cambridge, graduating with an MA in archaeology and anthropology and an MPhil in Archaeological Research. He recently completed his PhD in archaeology from the University of New England, Australia. His doctoral research focused on craft production of ceramics in Angkorian Cambodia with a strong emphasis on establishing absolute chronologies. Away from Cambodia he has undertaken geoarchaeological research on human-environmental interactions in Neolithic riverine and cave sites in the Western Balkans, examined changes in settlement patterns of Medieval English villages, and worked extensively in the commercial archaeology sector in both the UK and Australia. He has developed specialisms in radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, in addition to the experimental rehydroxylation dating (RHX) method. His present research is focused on examining the origins of Australian identity through subtle and subconscious expressions in material culture.
In addition to research, Dr Marriner is a professional heritage consultant with a wide skill base including excavation, research, and artefact analysis. He has strong analytical skills underpinned by a solid knowledge base of archaeometric dating methods, historic ceramics, and an excellent knowledge of Australian historical building materials. He utilises this knowledge and experience to produce a variety of publication standard technical and interpretive reports. He routinely works independently on large projects that fall under the realm of both the Heritage Act 1977 for Historical Archaeology and Built Heritage as well as the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 for Aboriginal Cultural Heritage. In doing so he collaborates effectively with stakeholders and clients and works diligently to provide solutions that satisfy the needs of all involved.
