Consulting Experience
Andy is a senior archaeologist and educator with extensive experience across Australia. He has accrued over 25 years of experience in Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal archaeology cultural heritage management and related training fields. He is experienced at site survey, heritage assessments, archaeological monitoring and has been involved in or supervised a number of archaeological excavations over his career. He has extensive skills in significance assessment and report writing including conservation management plans and other planning documents. He has a sound understanding of Northern Territory, Queensland and NSW heritage legislation, policies and procedures.
Andy has also undertaken roles as an educator in remote communities in Arnhem Land and as a community ranger trainer in the Torres Strait and Cape York. He speaks two Indigenous languages and maintains strong links with Indigenous communities in north Australia.
Andy has also worked in the government sectors in both the Queensland and Federal Environment portfolios with a focus on cultural heritage management and capacity building in the Indigenous ‘caring for country’ sector. He has undertaken numerous Indigenous heritage projects around Australia involving archaeological assessments, stone artefact analyses and the preparation of archaeological reports. In recent years
Andy has undertaken varied projects in the Northern Territory, Central Queensland, the Sydney Basin and Hunter Valley including due diligence surveys, the development of cultural heritage management plans, cultural values assessments, oral histories, photographic recording, and archaeological investigation. He is also experienced in undertaking heritage assessments for a wide range of historic sites, including places of Commonwealth and State heritage significance. In recent years he has been involved in lengthy archaeological monitoring programs for the Department of Defence and has recently updated the Heritage Management Plan for the Victoria Barracks in Sydney. Andy has written numerous statements of heritage impact for clients including Transport for NSW and the Roads and Maritime Service in recent times.
Selected Publications
In the last 20 years Andy has been the principal author of more than 150 consulting reports focusing on both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal heritage including archaeological survey reports, cultural management plans, due diligence assessments, statements of heritage impact and so on. Additionally, He has authored or co-authored five peer reviewed publications in relation to indigenous issues in conservation management. He has also made conference presentations at the Australian Archaeological Association, Australasian Wildlife Management Society and Australian Anthropological Society.
